The X-perience of a lifetime is here.
Airbnb has redesigned a private mansion in Westchester, N.Y. — the home of the X-Men in Marvel comics — into a replica of the mutant manor from “X-Men ’97.”
The mansion, decorated in the 2-D animation style of the Disney+ series, is complete with replicas of Wolverine’s and Jubilee’s bedrooms, Beast’s science lab, the telepathic Cerebro device, the Danger Room and other features. There’s even the severed head of an evil, robotic Sentinel laying in the front yard to greet you as you arrive.
The “X-Men ’97” mansion is part of Airbnb’s new Icons line, a series of unique experiences located around the world inspired by movies, TV, music and art. The company unveiled its first 11 Icons, which include the “Up” balloon house, Riley’s Headquarters from “Inside Out 2,” Prince’s “Purple Rain” home and more. Most of the Icon locations are free, and the others cost less than $100 per guest. They can be booked through the app, which displays a countdown timer for when each Icon is available. More than 4,000 lucky guests will be able to visit them in 2024.

Variety toured the “X-Men ’97” mansion ahead of the announcement and got the full superhero experience. The mutant home is tucked away in scenic Westchester, surrounded by woods and a sparkling lake that makes it feel like a real Marvel getaway. Upon arriving, the iconic “X-Men ’97” theme song blasts from the mansion as you walk up. The life-sized Sentinel head sits on a pile of rubble, a leftover that hasn’t been cleaned up after a previous X-Men battle.
Every nook and cranny of the mansion is vibrantly colored, with bold comic book sketch lines applied to surfaces to make it feel like you’re actually in an episode of “X-Men ’97.” Portraits of Charles Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Gambit, Bishop, Beast and more adorn the entryway. As you go inside, you’re greeted by three X-Men “trainees” who guide you through the experience.
First, you’ll ascend a winding staircase and tour the themed bedrooms. Wolverine’s room is covered in claw marks on the walls, no doubt caused by some razor-sharp, adamantium rage. His closet holds his civilian clothes, including a red flannel shirt and boots, and a fake gym bench sits in the corner for a quick workout. A pair of samurai swords, a token of a past X-Men mission, are mounted above the bed, and on his bedside table is a framed photo of Cyclops and Jean — inspired by the viral meme from “X-Men: The Animated Series.”

The bright, purple colors of Jubilee’s bedroom stand out against Wolverine’s rustic room. Music posters, star decals and a working TV with a VHS player decorate the young mutant’s quarters. There’s even an arcade machine with the classic “X-Men” game in the corner you can play. Jubilee’s yellow jacket, pink shirt and gloves hang in the closet. Next door, two guests can sleep in twin beds covered with blue X-Men bedspread.
After the room tour, Jubilee has a special welcome message for the visitors in a gadget room downstairs, filled with the rest of the X-Men’s costumes and weapons. You can get up close to Wolverine’s yellow spandex and mask, try on Cyclops’ visor and check out the “X-Men ’97” outfits for Gambit, Storm, Rogue and Sunspot.
Beast’s bedroom doubles as his science lab, and visitors are taught by an instructor how to make two fruity drinks. Beakers of juice, simple syrup and crushed ice await you for a quick refresher. After that, it’s trivia time in the Cerebro room. You can test your X-Men trivia and take a personality quiz to determine your mutant power — plus there’s a wearable Cerebro that’s perfect for a photo op.
The Danger Room is the final stop on the tour. A super-strong trainer will help you awaken your mutant abilities with some exercise warm-ups. You’ll play a few games in the huge training room, which has oversized dumbbells, laser cannons and whirring saws on the walls. After that, you’ll be led into Charles Xavier’s office and say goodbye to your guides as they’re whisked away to battle more Sentinels. Dinner (and breakfast the next morning) will be prepared for you; you’ll have the rest of the night to hang out in the mansion before your mutant vacation comes to an end.
